Report by Missouri Angler Missouri Angler Buddy Bass Derby
According to AmerenUE the current lake level is 654.72 with light
generation scheduled for the next three days, which according to AmereUE should give the
lake a level of 655.1 by Friday, February 27th. AmerenUE reports the water temperature
taken at Bagnell Dam at 40 degrees, however bass boat gauges show surface water
temperatures averaging between 36 degrees in the morning and 39 degrees in the afternoon
when the sun is out, however, some anglers reported finding water temperatures ranging 42
to 44 degrees in the backend of some creeks. The main Osage and most of the tributaries
are dirty from Truman Dam with visibility in the inches. The clearest water is in the
Gravois and Grand Glaize Rivers with visibility ranging from 3 to 10 feet. The Niangua
River is dirty, but is beginning to clear up. The ice has melted, but early in the morning
there has been a thin layer of ice in some of the creek arm pockets and even on the main
lake, but melts by sunup.
LARGEMOUTH BASS - FAIR The jerkbait bite has picked up, but it's still
taking a lot of patience and moving to different locations. Find the clearest water and
work the secondary points and channel swings having medium size chunk rock. The Lucky
Craft 100 and Bevy Shad (Clown, Aurora Gold and Aurora Black) and the 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 inch
Smithwick Rouge (Clown, Black/Silver with Orange Belly, Clown and Firetiger). The majority
of the bass being caught have been in 8 to 15 feet of water and the best method is to keep
your boat in 20 or 25 of water working the jerkbait slow and letting it set for a minute
or more. There have been reports that when the water warms up a degree or two in the
afternoon, some bass have been caught shallower on the points and in the pockets anywhere
from 8 to 5 feet. Try to locate the shad because where there is a large concentration of
shad the better the chances you have of catching a few keepers. The jig n trailer,(brown,
brown/purple, brown/black, grn pumpkin) with (brown, black or grn. pumpkin) trailers and
the Chomper twin tail and single tail grubs (grn. pumpkin, watermelon and dark melon
pepper) has slowed down, but is the better bite in the dirty water. There was a report
this weekend that a few keepers were caught on the Wiggle Wart in the Glaize River on
windy chunk rock banks.
SPOTTED BASS (KENTUCKY) - SLOW A few nice keepers have been caught off the secondary points on the same baits used for the largemouth. Live crawdads are also producing.
CRAPPIE - FAIR The crappie are concentrated on the
main lake bluffs and bluff points near brush 18 to 25 feet. Road Runners tipped and
marabou jigs (white, chartreuse/black, purple/white and blue/white) tipped with Crappie
Nibbles have been the best bite. Minnows also tipped with Crappie Nibbles are producing as
well.

JAMES RIVER Upper 43-46
MAIN LAKE 42-45
Weather is starting to warm up and so is the water temperatures. Good quality fish are being caught in many different areas of the lake
MAIN LAKE - DAM, KIMBERLING CITY, BAXTER & CAMPBELL POINT & SHELL KNOB
These clear water areas seem to be producing best, on a variety of baits. Stickbaits around main lake and secondary points over submerged timber, also channel swing banks in the creeks from the mouths to about 2/3rds back in. The best colors have been Purple/Chartreuse, Norman Flake Chrome Blue/Orange belly, Husky Jerks, Lucky Crafts, & Smithwick rogues, fished on 10-12 lb. line. If windy or cloudy try crawdad patterned wiggle warts and Rapala DT-10's. Try to key on chunk rock banks and ledge rock to chunk rock transitions.
Small jigs, tubes and twin tailed grubs working on still sunny days. Green pumpkin, watermelon have been the best colors for me. Team Supreme. Eakins jigs work best, or Chompers & Yamamoto Hula Grubs fished on 1/4 oz. heads. There are still deep fish on the bottom in 35'-45' over deeper water. I think these fish are starting to roam around more and moving into pre spawn areas. I've found a lot of the bait fish halfway back in the major creeks 25'-35' deep. These fish can be caught on 3/4 oz. chrome or white jigging spoons, 1/3 oz. single tail grubs, I & 3" tubes in smoke & salt/pepper colors. If fish are on bottom try 3/4 oz. football jigs tipped with twin tail grubs.
LONG CREEK & JAMES RIVER
Water temperatures are about the same in the morning but will warm up to 47-50 late in the afternoons. On warm days the same baits are working in the Mid James area, the further up you go the water has more color and jigs and crankbaits working best. Try slow rolling 1/2 oz. Chartreuse & White spinnerbaits around visible cover, Colorado-Willow leaf combinations, or Colorado blade-single spin.

GENERAL COMMENTS
Water Conditions: Not much change in the
generation pattern. They have been running water mostly in the morning starting anywhere
from 5:00 a.m. or 6:00 a.m. and turning it off around 10:00 a.m. or so. Generally have
most of the day when you can wade. Over the weekend, it as off all day Saturday and one
generator came on Sunday around 2:30 p.m.
FLY FISHING TROPHY AREA (dam to Fall Creek)-SHALLOW WATER-WADING-
Several trips out over the past week and we got to fish a little again this weekend with
friends. Guys out a week ago today probably boated close to 90 fish during the day. We
won't talk about the hits they didn't boat. We are catching more 14-17 inch fish than a
month ago. Over the weekend, Sunday fished the best of the two days. Several 15 inch plus
fish during the 4 hours we fished. Yesterday we had two boats on the water. Couple of
crazy ladies in one of the boats and bet they caught 50 plus fish. Have pictures of the
"birthday girl's" 17 incher. We started in the a.m. with the size 16 red
tunghead midge then finished the day after the water shut off with the size 18 black
zebra. When the water went flat (no current), we did the "chironomide wiggle"
and continued catching some nice fish. Did get into a run of the smaller fish for a while.
What a perfect day we had with both the weather, fishing and fun company!
STAN'S TIP: With the water current being pretty slow lately, wanted to
remind you about sizing indicators as small as you can to drift the fly you are fishing.
With the slower current, many times the strikes are difficult to detect. We have noticed
on several of our trips lately that the fish are just bearly moving, or just stopping the
indicator in the slower water. If you use a pretty large indicator, especially on those
size 16 and 18 midges, you may never see the strike.

The lake has went from 705.98 to 708.75 about four times in the last 6 weeks. This week, the COE pulled water up to 35,000 cfs. That's a load for the winter time.
