Report by Missouri Angler Missouri Angler Buddy Bass Derby
According to AmerenUE the current lake level is 655.20 with medium generation scheduled for the next three days, which according to AmerenUE will give the lake a level of 655.2 by Friday, March 6th. AmerenUE reports the lake water temperature at 40 degrees. The lake is slowly clearing, but still has that dingy appearance, especially in the main Osage River. The Grand Glaize, Niangua and Gravois Rivers are the clearest and have visibility ranging from 4 to 10 feet. Although the lake iced over this winter there has not been any signs of a shad kill. The most concentrated areas of shad have been in the back of the larger creeks especially during the afternoon on bright sunning days. The surface water temperatures in the dam and mid lake area average between 37 degrees in the morning and 41 degrees in the afternoon. There have been reports of surface temperatures in the mid to high 40's in the back of some of the creeks and larger coves and the upper portions of the Osage River during the afternoon.
LARGEMOUTH BASS / SPOTTED BASS (KENTUCKY) - FAIR
Bass fishing has improved, but is still slow compared to what it should be this time of the year, which many anglers contribute to the dingy water color and cold water temperatures. The suspended jerkbait bite is picking up, but is not as good as it should be this time of the year. The best structure to work the suspended jerkbait has been secondary points with chunk rock, points of creek arm pockets, and creek arm bluff points. The main thing is to find the clear water and if possible a concentration of shad near this type of structure. When working the suspended jerkbait it is best to twitch it one or twice and let it set for 30 to 60 seconds and then twitch it again and let it set. The majority of the bass are in 8 to 12 feet of water. The most consistent baits and colors have been the Lucky Craft 100 and Bevy Shad (Aurora Black, Nishiki (Clown), and Chartreuse Shad), and the Smithwick Rouge 4 1/2 inch and 5 1/2 inch (Clown, Blue/Silver sides, Black/Silver sides with orange belly and Grey Ghost). The jig and trailer (Grn. Pumpkin/Brown, Grn. Pumpkin/Watermelon Red and Brown) with trailers in (Brown, Watermelon Grn. Pumpkin and Grn. Pumpkin) have been productive especially in the dingier water. Reports that crawdad colored crankbaits have been producing some keepers off main lake bluff points and on creek channel banks with medium size chunk rock any where from 4 to 10 feet.CRAPPIE - FAIR
The crappie are suspended over brush on the main lake and creek arm bluffs in 18 to 25 feet of water. Road Runners and jigs (Chartreuse, Chartreuse/Black, Purple/White and White) and minnows have been the best bite. Tipping the baits with Crappie Nibbles seems to generate more bites.Updated 03/05/04

JAMES RIVER Upper 43-46
MAIN LAKE 42-45
Weather is starting to warm up and so is the water temperatures. Good quality fish are being caught in many different areas of the lake
MAIN LAKE - DAM, KIMBERLING CITY, BAXTER & CAMPBELL POINT & SHELL KNOB
These clear water areas seem to be producing best, on a variety of baits. Stickbaits around main lake and secondary points over submerged timber, also channel swing banks in the creeks from the mouths to about 2/3rds back in. The best colors have been Purple/Chartreuse, Norman Flake Chrome Blue/Orange belly, Husky Jerks, Lucky Crafts, & Smithwick rogues, fished on 10-12 lb. line. If windy or cloudy try crawdad patterned wiggle warts and Rapala DT-10's. Try to key on chunk rock banks and ledge rock to chunk rock transitions.
Small jigs, tubes and twin tailed grubs working on still sunny days. Green pumpkin, watermelon have been the best colors for me. Team Supreme. Eakins jigs work best, or Chompers & Yamamoto Hula Grubs fished on 1/4 oz. heads. There are still deep fish on the bottom in 35'-45' over deeper water. I think these fish are starting to roam around more and moving into pre spawn areas. I've found a lot of the bait fish halfway back in the major creeks 25'-35' deep. These fish can be caught on 3/4 oz. chrome or white jigging spoons, 1/3 oz. single tail grubs, I & 3" tubes in smoke & salt/pepper colors. If fish are on bottom try 3/4 oz. football jigs tipped with twin tail grubs.
LONG CREEK & JAMES RIVER
Water temperatures are about the same in the morning but will warm up to 47-50 late in the afternoons. On warm days the same baits are working in the Mid James area, the further up you go the water has more color and jigs and crankbaits working best. Try slow rolling 1/2 oz. Chartreuse & White spinnerbaits around visible cover, Colorado-Willow leaf combinations, or Colorado blade-single spin.

GENERAL COMMENTS
Representatives from the Missouri Department of Conservation attended our Trout
Unlimited meeting held on February 24. Many thanks to these folks for helping us preserve
our fishery. They have started some new methods to increase the regulation awareness and
enforcement on Taneycomo. Last weekend they issued 28 warning tickets and 27 actual
tickets for various violations such as keeping slot size fish, keeping fish over the
limit, using bait in the "special management area", etc. THANK YOU FOLKS! Please
remember....they are just enforcing the regulations which help make this OUR great
fishery.
Water Conditions: Not much change in the generation pattern. They
have been running water mostly in the morning starting anywhere from 5:00 a.m. or 6:00
a.m. and start shutting it down 10:00 a.m. Sometimes leaving 1 or 2 generators on for a
while then off. However, we have had lots of rain over the past two days and expect some
more today. Have to see what affect this has on the water flow. Expect it will be off most
of the weekend.
FLY FISHING TROPHY AREA (dam to Fall Creek)-SHALLOW WATER-WADING-
Trips out last week and over the past week, including the WINDY Sunday. Despite the wind,
the two boats out for 1/2 day caught quite a few fish and had a good time. Two guys out
Friday caught at least 25-30 fish each. Several in the 16 inch plus; one 17 incher. They
booked another 1/2 day Saturday morning and caught lots more! Confirmed an early Stonefly
hatch which has been going on for about two weeks. With some of the windy days, it was
difficult to catch one. We have also seen some size 18-20 gray dun Mayflies coming off. No
blizzard hatches, but enough to notice them. For the most part, we have been still been
doing best on the olive (bright days) or black (overcast days) zebra midges. However,
Saturday morning we tore them up on small BH Pheasant Tail and BH Hare's Ear nymphs. That
afternoon, they would not look at either of these patterns so we went back to the zebras
and started catching fish.
STAN'S TIP: With the water current being pretty slow lately, wanted to
remind you about sizing indicators as small as you can to drift the fly you are fishing.
With the slower current, many times the strikes are difficult to detect. We have noticed
on several of our trips lately that the fish are just bearly moving, or just stopping the
indicator in the slower water. If you use a pretty large indicator, especially on those
size 16 and 18 midges, you may never see the strike.
