Report by: Wilderness Trail "Braggin Board"
January 31, 2005
Pool level has been on a steady draw down throughout the month and we are still above normal at 658.10, which is 4 feet over normal pool. Lake temperature is in the mid 40’s and lake clarity is around 16 feet. The bite is slow for bass, walleye and crappie this winter because the high water conditions have the game fish scattered instead of schooled up. Fish crappie with Bobby Garland Swimming Minnows, tube baits or a small jigs along bluff walls or creek channel swings. Crappie minnows will also work but with the cold water temperatures crappie minnows do not swim around much.
Largemouth bass can be found in the back of some pockets in the creeks but it is not a pattern, it is just one here and one there. Use Suspending Rogues or Lucky Craft Pointer 78’s in the back of the pockets. Deep water at the entrance of the cuts and pockets are where most of the largemouth are holding. Vertical jigging spoons is your best bet in triggering a few. Smallmouth bass are really scattered and most of them are out over open water, not up against the banks or on the bottom. Jigs and tubes are real "iffy" at this time, drop shot with finesse worms and other drop shot baits is your best bet. Kentucky Bass are also hard to find. They are traveling with the shad, which takes a lot of graphing to locate them. Check main lake channel swing ends and the middle of main lake cuts and in the creek arms check the pockets on the north side. When you locate a school, drop spoons down to them or use a Stingray grub on a light 3/16 oz. jig head.
Walleye are also very hard to pattern or even locate. We know that there are walleye down in the flooded forest but with the high water the forest tops are about 60 to 64 feet deep and catching a walleye that deep will kill them bringing them to surface. So, you should key on walleye that are on the deep sides of feeding flats or points in 45 to 55 feet of water. Best baits are spoons or ball jigs with shiners.
The PWT returns May 11 through the 13th. 120 pros and 120 amateurs will see first-hand what a great walleye fishery exists on Bull Shoals. The PWT will once again operate from Bull Shoals Boat Dock. The amateurs fish each day of the three day tournament with a different pro for the maximum learning experience. Entry blanks are available at Wilderness Trail and Bull Shoals Lake Boat Dock. The action from the Bull Shoals tournament last year will be shown on the Outdoor Channel the week of Feb. 7th with shows on Monday at 7 p.m., Tuesday at 7 a.m., Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and Thursday at 11 p.m.
Fishing for trout on the White River has been good all winter. Right now there are a few shad coming through the dam so the White Chrome Domes, White jigs, and white Rooster Tails have been a good bait. When there is not much generation, Berkley Power Eggs in yellow and white have done well. With generation in addition to the Rooster Tails, the Buoyant spoon, Super Dupers and Little Cleo’s are the bait of choice. With a fair amount of generation the fly fishing has been limited but when able the olive Woolly Bugger, sow bugs and scuds have done well. The Brown trout are spawning and most are in the seasonal catch and release, but those that have fished for browns further down the river have done well on Countdowns, Shad Raps and Rogues.
Remember to keep only what you can eat and release the rest for another day. Rick Culver of Wilderness Trail does the research for this report and the writing of this report. For more information call Rick or Sue Culver at Wilderness Trail at 870-445-2703

Report by Missouri Angler Missouri Angler Buddy Bass Derby Results
According to AmerenUE the current lake level is 657.96 with very heavy generation scheduled for the next three days, which according to AmerenUE should give the lake a level of 657.6 by Friday, February 4th. The surface water temperature varies from 38 degrees in the lower end of the lake to 36 degrees in the upper portions. The main Osage River is muddy however, the larger creeks and coves are beginning to clear somewhat in the upper portions and pockets. The Grand Glaize, Gravois, Big and Little Niangua Rivers are muddy, but there are sections that are clearing some. The clearer portions are not Bull Shoals clear, but clear enough where the suspended jerk bait is becoming effective. Truman Lake is still 6 feet over normal pool. The Corp of Engineers continue to release water into Lake Ozark, which is causing the muddy conditions and debris floating in the Osage and major tributaries. Reports of bass being caught has increased over the last several days since the daytime temperatures have been in the mid 40's and can probably be attributed to the fact more anglers are on the lake because of the warmer temperatures. There is light snow in today's forecast, but according to weather reports this weekend is supposed to be in the 40's to 50'. Of course that can change.
LARGEMOUTH BASS - FAIR
The suspended jerk bait has been producing in the clearer water in the tributaries and larger creeks. The most productive method has been letting the bait set for several seconds, as long as 20 to 30 seconds before twitching the bait. The darker colors, such as fire tiger, aurora black or any bait with chartreuse have been the most productive off secondary points and off the points of pockets on creek of channels. Dark colored jigs and Chompers worked slow are also producing a few keeper bass on the same type of structure. Some bass have been caught out of brush piles and some on just plain chunk rock banks of creek channels or near the creek channel.CRAPPIE - FAIR
The crappie can be found anywhere from 12 to 25 feet suspended over brush in the creeks and larger tributaries. Minnows Road Runners and tube jigs are producing when tipped with Crappie Nibbles. When using the Road Runners and tube jigs a very slow retrieve is best or letting it set over the brush piles with occasional twitches.

It's time to be planning your outings for this year. The rooms are already filling up fast for this spring, if you plan on catching this year’s crappie or bass spawn, or the spring turkey hunt, you better make your reservations now.
There's been a lot of rain the past few weeks and it has the lake going up and down like a yoyo. It is currently dropping. The current cold spell has the lake freezing over. The coves are iced over and most of the main lake is starting to freeze over as well. The sun lunar time table charts have been updated for this year. These charts can be used to help narrow down the best times of the day, week or month to fish and hunt. Some fishermen and fishing tournaments plan trips around them, as well as hunters.
Speaking of tournaments, the schedule for this year is already taking shape.
Here's a link. The link located in the Fishing Trip Planning section of the South Fork Resort web site will also take you to it.This years fishing prospects for Mark Twain Lake as provided by the Fisheries Management Biologist.
Below are the prospects for Mark Twain for 2005.
As you know, fishing is dependent on a lot of factors that are difficult to predict, but this is the assessment based on surveys during 2004.Largemouth Bass fishing during 2004 was fair, and anglers can expect fishing to be similar during 2005. Based on spring 2004 surveys, bass abundance in Mark Twain has declined from the record levels during 2003. However, the abundance of bass at least 15 inches long should be higher during 2005 than it was during 2004, so anglers can expect to catch more larger fish this year. Three of every 10 fish caught during 2005 should exceed 15 inches long.
Crappie fishing during 2005 will also be similar to 2004, although the abundance of small crappie has declined. Fewer crappie in the lake during 2005 may lead to improved growth and more larger fish by summer's end if gizzard shad forage is adequate. Two or three of every ten crappie caught should exceed 9 inches long, and anglers should not have to filter through as many small crappie as they did during 2004.
White Bass fishing will remain sporadic. Anglers do best when these fish are spawning on riffles in tributary streams in early spring, or while feeding on schooling shad or congregating over underwater humps during the summer.
Walleye abundance remains low, although anglers are reporting more incidental catches than during most recent years. This may be a result of recent tributary stream stockings.
Catfish anglers can expect good fishing to continue this year. Many flathead catfish exceeding 25 pounds are caught each year on trot lines, bank lines, and jugs. Catfish anglers do best in the upper portions of North Fork, Middle Fork, and South Fork arms.

Trimble Wildlife area is closed to all boats. You can still use the W-boat ramp but can not go past the orange balls just North of the W bridge. If you put in at the Free ramp you can come South to the orange balls but not beyond.
The lake is completely covered with ice. It should have some open water by this weekend if the temperatures stay up.
CRAPPIE: Good: Some fish are still being caught but the fishing has slowed down. All of the marinas produce fish during the winter months but even that has slowed lately. Minnows or jigs bite are working. The docks at Campbranch are open to the public and fish are being caught. $2 per day to fish.
BASS: No Report: Not many people are fishing for the bass right now.

GENERAL COMMENTS
Water had been slowing down and even off. However, Beaver is going to release
enough water to drop 1/2 foot/day until February 10. This will impact the
generation at Table Rock. Fishing good! Our new address is 2626 State Hwy. 165,
just north of the Hatchery.
Water Conditions: Two generators going Tuesday morning when I
checked. Tailwater level was 704.8 and Table Rock was at 914.9 at 8:00 this
morning. Actually had the water Friday afternoon for about 6 hours and Sunday
afternoon for 3 hours. Been primarily running two generators; over the weekend
ran one for a period of time. This morning they were running four. Tailwater
level was 710.6 and Table Rock was at 915.0. Two running at Beaver.
FLY FISHING TROPHY AREA (dam to Fall Creek)-SHALLOW WATER-WADING-
With the water off over the weekend, took the boat out but wade fished at the
Rocking Chair area. Wonderful weekend. Had a fish or hit on almost every drift
with the rusty zebra midge. Set up a fellow who is brand new to fishing for
trout with the black zebra and he caught quite a few. The size 16 dark olive
soft hackle was working good and hooked a nice 17-1/2 inch Rainbow. Fish looked
good....beautiful color and, for the most part, had some girth to them. Not like
we had caught just a week or so earlier with the high water. Saturday, when the
horn went off indicating water rise, we changed to the good old red San Juan
worm and caught several more nice fish as we worked our way to the boat and
rowed back to the boat ramp. All in all a wonderful day! Talked to several
customers coming in who have been fishing in the hatchery area at and between
the chutes. Fishing has been good with olive woolly buggers, gray or tan scuds
and midges.
STAN'S TIP: Time to get out the gear and clean it up for spring!
