It is still warm during the day but the nights are dropping into the 60’s, which makes the morning fishing very comfortable. Lake level continues to drop, generation has been consistent round the clock with the heat in Texas and Oklahoma. The pool is at 648.17 this week, 6 feet below normal pool. As the lake level goes down so does the thermocline, which has stabilized at 34 feet. Lake temperature is around 81 degrees in the morning, heating to 84 degrees by mid-day and we really need some rain.
Crappie continue moving to back to the brush piles and around docks with structure. Live crappie minnows are the best bait fished on a plain hook and split shot. Fish 26 to 30 feet of water in the morning and 30 to 35 feet of water throughout the day.
Catfish were active this week on jugs with a 12 foot drop line. The entrance of the pockets in the creek arms seem to be producing numbers of catfish. Chicken liver, Magic Bait and frozen shad have been the best bait.
Largemouth bass can still be found up on the banks in the morning on buzz baits, Zara Spooks and Spit’N Image baits, most of the strikes are reaction strikes, so make sure you cover a lot of water. Secondary points and main lake points are holding largemouth in deeper water (30 to 35 feet). Best baits under these conditions are Spider Jigs, football jigs, Carolina rigs with brush hogs or trick worms and spoons fished vertically.
Smallmouth bass are holding out in the thermocline until mid-afternoon, then they are moving up on points in shallow water, not sure what that is all about. Spider Jigs, tubes and Mojo rigs with finesse worms or lizards have been working the best. Drop shot rigs with 4" drop shot worms or Swimming Minnows will trigger a few smallies that are suspended off the points.
Kentucky bass have been pushing shad to the surface throughout the day. Almost any top water lure will trigger some strikes during the frenzy feeding. Searching for schools of shad in the creeks and around the ends of the main lake channel swings is still the key for catching some nice Kentuckys. When you work a school, drop a ¾ to 1 oz spoon (white, blue/silver or silver) down through the shad, the Kentuckys are under the school of shad.
Walleye slowed down a bit this last week, at least the larger walleye; the 16 to 17" fish are still very active. With the thermocline now in the 34 to 36 foot range long liners are only getting bit if they are pulling lead core to get the baits down to the walleye. Hot baits are Reef Runners (blue/silver, trout and gray ghost colors), Hot’N Tot (fire tiger and purple passion) and Bill Norman’s DD14’s in 000 and 133 (shad) colors. Vertical spooning is also working well on the walleye that are hugging the bottom. Best colors are blue/silver, white and gray/orange belly).
LAKE RATING: The rating continues to be fair as the lake continues to fall and the bite is "iffy".
Fishing for trout on the White River has been good on Berkley Power Eggs in yellow and Nuggets in orange. With generation the Buoyant Spoons, Blue Fox and Little Cleo's are the bait of choice. The fly fishermen did well on olive Woolly Bugger, soft hackles, Zebra Midge and olive scuds and sow bugs. The Brown trout are being caught on Countdowns, Flat Fish and nightcrawlers.
Remember to keep only what you can eat and release the rest for another day. Rick Culver of Wilderness Trail does the research for this report and the writing of this report.

Catfish: Good: Bruce and Jeanette did pretty good catfishing off the docks this weekend. They used nightcrawlers fished about 4’ below their bobbers. Cut shad bellies continue to work well out in the main channel. The fish are still in the deeper water until water temperatures drop a few more degrees.
Bass (Largemouth): Fair: Stu was out on the lake this morning with a couple buddies and lost a nice one near the boat. He recommends a rubber green minnow sold by Wal-Mart by the ½ dozen. He said the bass really tear them up.
Crappie: Fair: I saw a few crappie caught off the docks this weekend. It had been a while since I had seen a crappie caught around the docks so I take this as a good sign. Minnows are the bait of choice. Once we have our first good cold front I anticipate the crappie fishing really picking up.

The rivers feeding Mark Twain Lake are turning over. The 21st annual Bud-Light Bass Tournament is this weekend, good luck to all that enter.
Crappie reports have been spotty this week. It's still mostly small crappie, bigger ones have been more frequent the past week and a half. The weather fronts this week have messed with the fishing. The best reports have come off of the main lake points and tree lines, about 10 - 15 feet deep. Minnows have worked the best. If using jigs, then tip them with minnows.
Bass fishing has been fair. Plastics around main lake points.
Cat Fishing continues to be good. The rain this week has the rivers and creeks flowing. Nightcrawlers and cut shad have been the best bait for rod and reel fishermen, still catching mostly channel cats. Flatheads on trotline have been fair, using gold fish and perch.
White Bass fishing has been fair. There have been a few reports of fishermen catching good numbers of white bass.

Report by Burton's Bait and Tackle
CRAPPIE: Fair: The fish are really scattered so you have to keep on the move to catch a limit of keepers. Still plenty of smaller fish, just fewer of the big ones. They are still in their summer patterns. Fish the brush piles and tree lines in the deeper water. Catch one or two nice keepers and move to the next tree. The fish are in 8' to 24' of water approx. 10' feet deep. This pattern should hold true for the rest of the summer. Minnows seem to be the preferred bait.
BASS: Fair: There seems to be some main lake action starting. Some nice fish are being caught occasionally but not consistently. Worms, jigs, brush hogs seem to catch the majority of the fish. Some are coming on spinner baits and cranks. 8' or less of water seems to be the areas to concentrate on.
CATFISH: FAIR: The crappie fishermen are catching some nice ones in the deeper water on minnows so try the 20' of water areas with your favorite bait. Also other fishermen are reporting fish in shallow water back in the coves. Dip baits are working very well in the lake and in the rivers. Since they are letting some water out of the lake the spillway should start producing some nice fish.
White Bass: Good: The rest of the summer should continue to produce nice stringers of whites. Fish main lake points early and late by throwing small crankbaits in the 2' to 8' water depths. If the fish don't show up on the points just back out to 15' of water and try pepper spoons on the bottom. Watch for surfacing schools. During the day troll to find the schools which are roaming following the shad. The size of most of the fish is excellent.
WALLEYE: Poor: Still no walleye. The wallies have sort of vanished for the time being. They are either buried in the grass of laying in deep water either making them difficult to get to. Use crankbaits or a jig and leech or crawler.

GENERAL COMMENTS - Water off more than on!
Water Conditions: Over the past five days, water has been off more than
on. Running water in the afternoon anywhere from two hours to six hours.
FLY FISHING TROPHY AREA (dam to Fall Creek)-SHALLOW WATER-WADING-
Just returned from Colorado where we attended the annual Fly Fishing Dealers
Show in Denver. Couldn't leave Colorado without fishing, so we headed to Eleven
Mile Canyon section of the South Platte and fished a little. Sure wish we had
mayfly hatches here like we saw there! The road into the canyon is the worst
road we have ever been on! However, it was worth it (I think). Beautiful winding
river flowing over lots of rounded rocks. Caught and missed several fish on size
22 Tricos in the morning. Caught one nice Cutthroat on a 22 midge emerger and a
Brown on the old faithful black woolly bugger. If you get out that way,
certainly worth bouncing up the road to the fishing areas. Guides were busy
while we were gone. Over the weekend, the rusty and Ugly zebra midges were
working in the mornings. Sunday had fellow out throwing the dark olive size 12
woolly with an intermediate sink tip. He had a good day with 30-40 fish. In the
afternoon on Sunday they fired up one generator and the tan flashback scud fish
well in the riffles as well as the float out. In the hatchery area, the tan or
gray scuds, size 14 were working as well as a dark tan San Juan Work. Yesterday,
the boats were catching fish all morning on the Ugly or Rust midges. Saw two
nice Browns Sunday with full color. All the fish are really looking good, lots
of fight and great colors. Don't forget if you are out fishing with the water
off. If the horn sounds, don't roll it up. Get yourself to a safe place from the
water rise and change to a larger, weighted scud (12) or a San Juan worm (dark
tan was really good this past weekend), add some split shot, a large indicator
set pretty deep depending on where you are fishing, and fish the rise. You don't
have to cast out very far. Look where the fish are sliding in toward the bank
and fish those edges.
STAN'S TIP: Everyone has had it happen. You put your rod pieces together
and can't get them apart. If this happens, and you have tried all the other
techniques to get them apart, try putting ice around the joint. Let it cool down
for a bit then try to get them apart. This usually works after everything else
has failed.

MAIN LAKE Report by Sterett Creek Marina
Last night we had a 1 1/2" of rain which we really needed, and the other good thing is that it did not affect the lake level or water clarity in our area. The upper arms had a little wash in but everything else looks good. This weekend we are having the Sterett Creek Open Buddy Bass Tourn. on Saturday. Everyone is welcome. Contact the marina for info, 660-438-2280.
LAKE LEVEL: 707.56
WATER TEMP: 79 deg.
WATER CLARITY: Big & Little Tebo, light stain.
Upper Grand, stained.
Lower Grand, light stain.
Big & Little Pommie, clear
Upper Osage, stained.
Lower Osage, light stain.
BASS: Think shallow. Laydowns on the flats, 3' to 5' of water. Spinner baits are starting along with jigs. There are still some good point fish in 8' to 12' of water on big worms. Watermelon and red shad are two of the best colors. Secondary points seem to be working better. The shad are starting to move back so I think the creek bite should really get going.
CRAPPIE: The crappie are doing about the same as last week. It doesn't seem to matter if you are on the bluffs or the flats fish 8' to 10' down with minnows. There has been a good bite on the Grand from Otter Creek to Finey Creek. The brush pile fish are still hitting. Look for piles in 15' to 20' of water. Here again minnows are the top bait.
WHITES & HYBRIDS: The white bass are still doing good on spoons. The best areas are from the dam to KK Island. Fish the humps. There have been some hybrids surfacing in the same areas but they aren't staying up very long. Sassy shad and hawg sticks are two of the better baits.
CATFISH: Night crawlers on the humps is the best with rod and reel right now. 16' to 25' seems to be working the best. Also jugs baited with shad on the flats has produced this week. Fish about 12'.
That's it for this week from Sterett Creek Marina
Don't forget the Sterett Creek Open Buddy Bass Tourn. this Sat.
With that we bid you good fishin.

Report for Grand River Arm by Bucksaw Marina
Crappie fishing is good. Most fish are being caught on flats. There are some fish being caught in the creeks. The best approach is to use minnows and tight line going tree to tree. Most fish are in 12 ft to 20 ft of water fishing 10 ft deep.
Bass are being caught on spinner baits and crankbaits in 2 to 6 ft of water. The best bite is from daylight to around 11:00 or just before dark. Several being caught. Fish the points, main lake and secondary, keep on the move.
Catfish are being caught on the flats in 10 ft of water using jugs. Most are being caught on cut bait. Seeing several white cats and channel cats.
* New Missouri regulations require that jug lines be attended at all times unless anchored.
