What a week – can anyone remember the last time we saw temperatures in the 50’s? Well, it was May 12th and then again this last week when a front blew in and dropped 2" of rain, which changed the daytime temperatures into the 70’s and the night time temperatures into the upper 50’s. We have been so dry through the summer that the 2" of rain soaked right into the ground and didn’t flow into the lake. Lake level this week is 647.71, 6 ½ feet below normal pool. The thermocline has been dropping a little each week with the pool draw down. This week the thermocline is at 35 feet and steady. Lake temperature is finally out of the 80’s and into the 70’s, as of Sunday morning the surface temperature was 77.5 degrees.
Crappie were spotty this week, one day they were on the brush piles and the next day they were suspended out in front of the brush piles. Crappie minnows still are the #1 bait to use, but crappie grubs and Swimming Minnows are also triggering a few.
Largemouth bass made a little movement towards the banks with the cool down but we are going to be back in the 90’s again this week so that move will be short lived. Work the banks in the middle of the pockets and creeks first thing in the morning with buzz baits, Zara Spooks or Sammy’s. After the sun hits the surface move to secondary points with jigs, Carolina rigs or Mojo rigs.
Smallmouth bass are back to feeding on crawdads and are using chunk rock and pea rock points to feed on. The best bite is in the morning and again around 2 to 6 in the afternoon. Spider Jigs, tubes, Carolina rigging centipedes and football jigs are all producing some nice smallies. Kentucky bass disappeared the latter part of the week due to movement of shad into shallower water.
The Kentuckys will find them in a day or day so continue looking for concentrations of shad in pockets off the main lake and cuts in the creek arms. With the cooler surface temperature we should see some top water frenzy feeding in the next day or two. Use Pop R’s, Chug Bugs and Spit’N Image baits during the top water feeding. Spoons are still the best lure to use on Kentuckys this time of year, they react to them even if they are not feeding.
Walleye are out in the thermocline around points and over the flooded forest. A number of anglers have been spooning vertically and catching quite a few nice walleye this week. Long liners have also been having some success pulling smaller baits with lead core line. A few baits that are working are Hot’N Tots, Wally Divers, Reef Runner Deep Little Rippers and #5 Glass Shad. Stay in 34 to 38 feet of water even on sunny hot days. As long as the walleyes food source is in the thermocline the walleye will stay there.
LAKE RATING: Although the weather pattern cooled things down the game fish have not really reacted to it and it is going to warm up again this week – Rating is fair.
Fishing for trout on the White River has been good on Berkley Power Eggs in yellow, white and pink. . With generation the Buoyant Spoons, Blue Fox and Little Cleo's are the bait of choice. The fly fishermen did well on olive Woolly Bugger, Zebra Midge and olive scuds and sow bugs. The Brown trout are being caught on Countdowns, Flat Fish and Rogues.
Remember to keep only what you can eat and release the rest for another day. Rick Culver of Wilderness Trail does the research for this report and the writing of this report.

Catfish: Good: Bruce and Jeanette did pretty good catfishing off the docks this weekend. They used nightcrawlers fished about 4’ below their bobbers. Cut shad bellies continue to work well out in the main channel. The fish are still in the deeper water until water temperatures drop a few more degrees.
Bass (Largemouth): Fair: Stu was out on the lake this morning with a couple buddies and lost a nice one near the boat. He recommends a rubber green minnow sold by Wal-Mart by the ½ dozen. He said the bass really tear them up.
Crappie: Fair: I saw a few crappie caught off the docks this weekend. It had been a while since I had seen a crappie caught around the docks so I take this as a good sign. Minnows are the bait of choice. Once we have our first good cold front I anticipate the crappie fishing really picking up.

The rivers feeding Mark Twain Lake are turning over. The 21st annual Bud-Light Bass Tournament is this weekend, good luck to all that enter.
Crappie reports have been spotty this week. It's still mostly small crappie, bigger ones have been more frequent the past week and a half. The weather fronts this week have messed with the fishing. The best reports have come off of the main lake points and tree lines, about 10 - 15 feet deep. Minnows have worked the best. If using jigs, then tip them with minnows.
Bass fishing has been fair. Plastics around main lake points.
Cat Fishing continues to be good. The rain this week has the rivers and creeks flowing. Nightcrawlers and cut shad have been the best bait for rod and reel fishermen, still catching mostly channel cats. Flatheads on trotline have been fair, using gold fish and perch.
White Bass fishing has been fair. There have been a few reports of fishermen catching good numbers of white bass.

Report by Burton's Bait and Tackle
CRAPPIE: Fair: The fish are really scattered so you have to keep on the move to catch a limit of keepers. Still plenty of smaller fish, just fewer of the big ones. They are still in their summer patterns. Fish the brush piles and tree lines in the deeper water. Catch one or two nice keepers and move to the next tree. The fish are in 8' to 24' of water approx. 10' feet deep. This pattern should hold true for the rest of the summer. Minnows seem to be the preferred bait.
BASS: Fair: There seems to be some main lake action starting. Some nice fish are being caught occasionally but not consistently. Worms, jigs, brush hogs seem to catch the majority of the fish. Some are coming on spinner baits and cranks. 8' or less of water seems to be the areas to concentrate on.
CATFISH: FAIR: The crappie fishermen are catching some nice ones in the deeper water on minnows so try the 20' of water areas with your favorite bait. Also other fishermen are reporting fish in shallow water back in the coves. Dip baits are working very well in the lake and in the rivers. Since they are letting some water out of the lake the spillway should start producing some nice fish.
White Bass: Good: The rest of the summer should continue to produce nice stringers of whites. Fish main lake points early and late by throwing small crankbaits in the 2' to 8' water depths. If the fish don't show up on the points just back out to 15' of water and try pepper spoons on the bottom. Watch for surfacing schools. During the day troll to find the schools which are roaming following the shad. The size of most of the fish is excellent.
WALLEYE: Poor: Still no walleye. The wallies have sort of vanished for the time being. They are either buried in the grass of laying in deep water either making them difficult to get to. Use crankbaits or a jig and leech or crawler.

GENERAL COMMENTS
Running water this week!
Water Conditions: Saturday and Sunday, water conditions were great. One generator on Saturday for a couple hours in the morning and Sunday they turned on a low two at 2:00 p.m. for about 5 hours. This week it has come on as early as 7:00 a.m. yesterday to the latest of noon on Tuesday. Little erratic pattern. It has been on as late as 10:00 p.m.
FLY FISHING TROPHY AREA (dam to Fall Creek)-SHALLOW WATER-WADING-
Of course, Saturday and Sunday fished very good. With the low water, zebra midges were working very well, especially the rusty, generally in the a.m. and the ugly as the day brightened up. Sunday we fished the sink-tip line with black woolly buggers or the sculpin. It was overcast Sunday and the black woolly buggers did best. I did catch several with the sculpin until one finally took it (5X tippet. next time it will be 4X). With the water flows during this week, the red tunghead midge and tan flashback scud have been the ticket. Tuesday we had three boats out and they did well on the ugly zebra midge. They had one guest throwing the Big Ugly (ugly looking dry fly) and he caught several with this. Customers coming into the shop have been picking up some fish on hopper patterns, especially yellow. Time to try those terrestrial patterns! Yesterday's trip was in two generators and, again, the red tunghead midge and tan flashback scud were the flies. Have seen a couple 24 inch plus Browns cruising the boat ramp area. Know a few nice Browns have been caught in the hatchery area. Mostly fishing scuds, tan or gray in the hatchery area. were If the horn sounds, don't roll it up. Get yourself to a safe place from the water rise and change to a larger, weighted scud (12) or a San Juan worm, add some split shot, a large indicator set pretty deep depending on where you are fishing, and fish the rise. You don't have to cast out very far. Look where the fish are sliding in toward the bank and fish those edges.
STAN'S TIP: Everyone has had it happen. You put your rod pieces together and can't get them apart. If this happens, and you have tried all the other techniques to get them apart, try putting ice around the joint. Let it cool down for a bit then try to get them apart. This usually works after everything else has failed.

MAIN LAKE Report by Sterett Creek Marina
It sure looks like fall in the mornings with the fog but about noon when it starts to heat up its just like summer again. The mornings have been cool and perfect for fishing but when it jumps up to about 90 at noon it gets a little sticky. Hasn't seemed to bother the fish though. I think that they could like to start moving on a fall pattern but the temp just won't let them. I have heard of a lot of point fish this week so maybe they are going to move a little anyway.
LAKE LEVEL: 707.95
WATER TEMP: 77 deg.
WATER CLARITY: Big & Little Tebo, Light stain
BASS: We had the Sterett Creek Open Bass Tourn last week end and Doug and Ozzie Wallace were the winners with 12.01 lbs.
2nd. Chuck Strohman and Jeff Rehmer, 9.13 Big Bass 3.80 lbs.
3rd. Russell Beck and Dustin Cox, 7.24 lbs.
4th. Rick Barton and Jerry Heenan, 6.74
5th. Ken Mason and Randy James, 6.66 lbs.
6th. Larry Wright and Ron Taddiken, 6.54 lbs.
We would like to thank all the participants and are looking forward to the Hawg Fights next spring. The best bite right now is either jig and frog or big worms on the points in 7' of water. Best colors are watermelon red or black and blue. The first point off main lake seems to be holding the most fish. There were some spinner bait fish caught in the lower Osage off laydowns. This is the time of the year that the little guys seem to be hungry and you have to weed your way through them.
CRAPPIE: The crappie have slowed up a little this week. Most folks are catching them out of 10' of water. It doesn't seem to matter if you are fishing 12' or 30' the fish seem to be holding at 10'. Minnows are still the top bait. There are still fish on the brush piles but they seem to be running small.
WHITES & HYBRIDS: I don't know why but it seems when the crappie slow down the whites and hybrids pick up. We have seen a lot of nice whites this week and some real good hybrids. The humps are the best spots when fished with spoons. 16' seems to be the best depth. KK Island has been hot along with the airport. The hybrids are still hitting the big sassy shad in the same areas. Haven't heard of much surface activity yet.
CATFISH: Jugs on the flats baited with cut shad seems to be working in this area. Set jugs about 12' Next to deep water. There are still a few fish being caught off the humps on rod and reel with night crawlers. 12' to 16' seems to be the best.
For the leaf lookers our leaves haven't started turning yet.
But if you are traveling in the lakes area be careful the deer are moving about dusk.
So till next week we bid you good fishing.
Tommy

Report for Grand River Arm by Bucksaw Marina
Crappie fishing is good. Most fish are being caught on flats. There are some fish being caught in the creeks. The best approach is to use minnows and tight line going tree to tree. Most fish are in 12 ft to 20 ft of water fishing 10 ft deep.
Bass are being caught on spinner baits and crankbaits in 2 to 6 ft of water. The best bite is from daylight to around 11:00 or just before dark. Several being caught. Fish the points, main lake and secondary, keep on the move.
Catfish are being caught on the flats in 10 ft of water using jugs. Most are being caught on cut bait. Seeing several white cats and channel cats.
* New Missouri regulations require that jug lines be attended at all times unless anchored.
