Sunday morning we were watching the rain from Hurricane Rita. We don’t know how much rain we will get from this system, but at least it is giving us some much needed water. Lake temperature should come down a little this week with the predicted lower night time temperatures. As of Sunday morning the lake temperature is 78.7 degrees. Lake level is about the same as last week, at 647.80, 6 ½ feet below normal pool. With the rain we might gain a little back this week. The thermocline is now at 31 feet and is four feet wide, the temperature in the thermocline is 69 degrees. It was very hot this last week and the crappie again pulled out of the brush piles and moved out into the thermocline for comfort.
Crappie minnows and Swimming Minnows worked the best this week in 30+ feet of water. Because the weather pattern will change the lake temperature and lake level this week we will give you a professional guess with the game fish.
Largemouth bass will still be on the banks in the mornings but with the lower water temperatures and some wind spinner baits and/or crankbaits should start working. Also stay with your Carolina rigs but change your baits over to smaller baits such as finesse worms, centipedes and baby brush hogs or 5" lizards.
Smallmouth will move into transition banks and points to forage on crawdads. The bite is already starting but most of the smallies are under 15", which is normal as they move in first. Tubes, Spider Jigs, Mojo rigs with finesse worms or centipedes and grubs will be your key baits for the next few weeks.
Kentuckys have been swimming with the balls of shad all summer, now the shad are moving in toward the banks in the cuts and coves and the Kentuckys will be forced to feed on crawdads along with the shad. Pop R’s and Chug Bug baits will start to pick up in the early morning; tubes, Spider Jigs and Mojo rigged centipedes or Fish Doctors will work during the day.
Walleye are very hard to target during the fall transition period. Once the lake temperature makes the low 70’s, the walleye that have been holding in the thermocline will move toward the drop offs off the points and forage on crawdads, sunfish or shad. This means that the walleye will be scattered and difficult to pattern. Meanwhile stay with the spooning, pulling bottom bouncers and long lining Hot’N Tots and Reef Runners in 30 to 35 feet of water.
LAKE RATING: The bite should pick up throughout the week and weeks to come, but there are so many variables to consider that we will wait and see what Mother Nature deals us – Rating is fair.
Fishing for trout on the White River has been good on Berkley Power Eggs in yellow and white or Nuggets in yellow and Chartreuse. With generation the Buoyant Spoons, and Little Cleo's are the bait of choice. The fly fishermen did well on olive Woolly Bugger, olive scuds and sow bugs. The Brown trout are being caught on Jointed Countdowns, Shad Raps and Rogues.
Remember to keep only what you can eat and release the rest for another day. Rick Culver of Wilderness Trail does the research for this report and the writing of this report.

The Fish Are Back on All Fronts!
Bass (Largemouth): Excellent! 13 year old Chandler Young and his fishing buddy, Dale Ladd from Independence, Mo. did very well in the small cove just to the North of our parking lot Saturday evening. Their presentation of White and Black Buzz Baits resulted in four nice largemouth bass all between 12" and15" in 25 minutes. They quickly followed up with a couple more really nice fish as evidenced in the photo. Dale claims whenever the water is running for some reason the largemouth seem to school up in our small cove. He claims during a good gate release he has caught bass on every cast. His theory once again proved correct. After our photo session the two sportsmen released all their bass unharmed. Well Done Boys!
Catfish: Good. Roy Green feather a local catfish legend caught 7 nice channel cats all 3#s or better Saturday morning. He swears by a smelly concoction called Sonny’s stink bait purchased at Bass Pro shop. He uses a spring-loaded device with a treble hook topped by a sponge and a small tubular sleeve within which he packs the stink bait inside, on, and around. He has used the stuff for 5 years with excellent results. My brother Bernie caught a nice 8# white channel cat Friday off the docks in front of our gas pumps on liver and CPT Matt McKinney came down with a gang from Ft. Leonard Wood and all the boys caught a nice mess of catfish on everything from hot dogs to dead crappie minnows while fishing off the docks.
Crappie: Good Richard Curry and J.J. caught this nice stringer of Crappie Saturday in Cole Camp Creek Cove. Minnows did the trick for them. Al Owens limited out on Crappie Thursday evening while fishing with his wife. He used minnows and he claims she provided the luck he needed!
White Bass: Good Kenny Hale caught four nice white bass and a large catfish while fishing the flats Saturday afternoon. The wipers and catfish struck his white rooster tail while he was slow trolling. He is shown here holding up his two best fish.
Remember a bad day fishing is better than a great day at work.

Crappie reports have been mixed, both in how good the fishing is and where they are being caught. The reports earlier in the week were pretty good, however it slowed down considerably since the cold front hit Wednesday night. Some fishermen had good fishing, catching them about 20 feet deep in the usual summer pattern. And other fishermen found their best fish in about 5 - 10 feet of water and going down about 2 feet deep. Once this front settles down it is expected to push the crappie even more toward a fall pattern. Minnows, or minnow tipped jigs.
Bass fishing continues it's slow pattern. Although one fisherman reported catching some at about 10 feet deep suspended over deeper water, near points and the mouths of coves, with spinner baits.
Cat Fishing continues to be good. Channel catfish have been the most active, for both trot liners and rod and reel fishermen. Some flatheads are being caught.
White Bass fishing has been good.

Report by Burton's Bait and Tackle
CRAPPIE: Fair: The fish are really scattered so you have to keep on the move to catch a limit of keepers. Still plenty of smaller fish, just fewer of the big ones. They are still in their summer patterns. Fish the brush piles and tree lines in the deeper water. Catch one or two nice keepers and move to the next tree. The fish are in 8' to 24' of water approx. 10' feet deep. This pattern should hold true for the rest of the summer. Minnows seem to be the preferred bait.
BASS: Fair: There seems to be some main lake action starting. Some nice fish are being caught occasionally but not consistently. Worms, jigs, brush hogs seem to catch the majority of the fish. Some are coming on spinner baits and cranks. 8' or less of water seems to be the areas to concentrate on.
CATFISH: FAIR: The crappie fishermen are catching some nice ones in the deeper water on minnows so try the 20' of water areas with your favorite bait. Also other fishermen are reporting fish in shallow water back in the coves. Dip baits are working very well in the lake and in the rivers. Since they are letting some water out of the lake the spillway should start producing some nice fish.
White Bass: Good: The rest of the summer should continue to produce nice stringers of whites. Fish main lake points early and late by throwing small crankbaits in the 2' to 8' water depths. If the fish don't show up on the points just back out to 15' of water and try pepper spoons on the bottom. Watch for surfacing schools. During the day troll to find the schools which are roaming following the shad. The size of most of the fish is excellent.
WALLEYE: Poor: Still no walleye. The wallies have sort of vanished for the time being. They are either buried in the grass of laying in deep water either making them difficult to get to. Use crankbaits or a jig and leech or crawler.

GENERAL COMMENTS
Running water this week!
Water Conditions: Saturday and Sunday, water conditions were great. One generator on Saturday for a couple hours in the morning and Sunday they turned on a low two at 2:00 p.m. for about 5 hours. This week it has come on as early as 7:00 a.m. yesterday to the latest of noon on Tuesday. Little erratic pattern. It has been on as late as 10:00 p.m.
FLY FISHING TROPHY AREA (dam to Fall Creek)-SHALLOW WATER-WADING-
Of course, Saturday and Sunday fished very good. With the low water, zebra midges were working very well, especially the rusty, generally in the a.m. and the ugly as the day brightened up. Sunday we fished the sink-tip line with black woolly buggers or the sculpin. It was overcast Sunday and the black woolly buggers did best. I did catch several with the sculpin until one finally took it (5X tippet. next time it will be 4X). With the water flows during this week, the red tunghead midge and tan flashback scud have been the ticket. Tuesday we had three boats out and they did well on the ugly zebra midge. They had one guest throwing the Big Ugly (ugly looking dry fly) and he caught several with this. Customers coming into the shop have been picking up some fish on hopper patterns, especially yellow. Time to try those terrestrial patterns! Yesterday's trip was in two generators and, again, the red tunghead midge and tan flashback scud were the flies. Have seen a couple 24 inch plus Browns cruising the boat ramp area. Know a few nice Browns have been caught in the hatchery area. Mostly fishing scuds, tan or gray in the hatchery area. were If the horn sounds, don't roll it up. Get yourself to a safe place from the water rise and change to a larger, weighted scud (12) or a San Juan worm, add some split shot, a large indicator set pretty deep depending on where you are fishing, and fish the rise. You don't have to cast out very far. Look where the fish are sliding in toward the bank and fish those edges.
STAN'S TIP: Everyone has had it happen. You put your rod pieces together and can't get them apart. If this happens, and you have tried all the other techniques to get them apart, try putting ice around the joint. Let it cool down for a bit then try to get them apart. This usually works after everything else has failed.

MAIN LAKE Report by Sterett Creek Marina
Fishing Report from Sterett Creek Marina 10/5/05
If the weather forecasters are right we should be in for some good fishing this weekend. We have a real strong cold front moving through the area which should drop the water temp to the point that the whites will be on the banks big time. We are supposed to have some good wind which will also help. the leaves still haven't started to turn yet but the acorns are dropping like crazy so the leaves should start real soon.
LAKE LEVEL: 705.91
WATER TEMP: 74 deg.
WATER CLARITY: Big & Little Tebo, light stain.
Big & Little Pommie, clear.
Upper Osage, stained.
Lower Osage, light stain.
Upper Grand, stained.
Lower Grand, clear.
BASS: spinner baits and tubes in the back ends of the coves. 2' to 5' of water. Look for shad. Main lake points 6' to12' of water, using jig and frog and big worms. There have been some fish holding in the cedars off the points so be sure to check them. Black and blue and watermelon and red have been the two best colors. The top water bite slowed down but with this front I think it will pick right back up.
CRAPPIE: The brush pile fish are the best thing going now. Fish the piles in 12' to 20' with minnows. The crappie seem to be holding right on top of the brush. There has been some nice crappie caught drifting minnows on top of the wier in front of the dam.
WHITES & HYBRIDS: With the weather we have coming in there should be whites on most of the flat bare banks in our area. Last weekend there a lot of fish caught off these banks but they would slow up when the sun got high in the sky. The water has warmed a little this week which slowed them down but like I said with this front I think it will push them right back up. Rat L Traps and Rooster Tails are the two top baits. Remember when fishing the flats that its really hard to fish to shallow. These fish will be in 2' of water or less.
CATFISH: No report.
That's it for this week from Sterett Creek Marina
So till next week we bid you good fishin.

Report for Grand River Arm by Bucksaw Marina
Crappie are moving to the creeks. The water is cooling off so look for the creeks with lots of structure. Fish water 12 ft or more down 8 to 9 ft. When the water cools off the fish will hit a jig. Fish the creek channels using a black and char tube or a minnow on a 1/16 oz jig. Seeing several fish.
Bass are moving to the creeks and being caught on spinner baits in 4ft to 6 ft of water. The back half of the creeks is the best. Keep your boat on the move cover lots of water and you'll catch fish.
Catfish No report
White bass are being caught on the windy points using any thing that resembles a shad. You need wind to make it good look for points with lots of wind and fish it out and find another point. The long shoal area is the best.
* New Missouri regulations require that jug lines be attended at all times unless anchored.
