The Bass World Classic was in town this last week and the anglers had their skills tested by Mother Nature. The week started out with temperatures in the 90’s, then by mid-week a northern front pushed through dropping night time temperatures into the low 40’s to upper 30’s and the daytime temperatures into the 60’s throughout the weekend. Lake level remains 7 feet below normal pool at 647.24. Lake temperature dropped 5 degrees going into the tournament – on Wednesday it was 77 and by Friday it was down to 72 degrees and the cool down pulled the thermocline up to 31 feet. Rod Bowersox and Bill Swineburg of the St. Charles, MO area found schools of bass and figured a way to make them bite. Rod & Bill brought 27.90 pounds of bass to the scales to win the two day tournament. Congratulations to Rod and Bill and all of the competitors. The winning technique was top water in the mornings and spooning schools of shad along with working points casting Bill Norman DD22’s.
Largemouth bass have left the banks but on the other hand so have the shad. Secondary points and deep structures off the banks are now holding the largemouth. As the lake stabilizes the largemouth will return to the banks and backs of the creeks following the return of the shad. Meanwhile fish jigs, tubes and Mojo rigged finesse worms or centipedes on the points and in the deeper structures.
Smallmouth bass have also slid back into deeper water but they are still in transition bank areas. Here again the smallies need the lake to stabilize to return to their fall patterns. Back off a little, put your boat in 38 feet of water and fish tubes, Spider Jigs, Football jigs and small crankbaits through 26 to 31 feet of water.
Kentuckys are now easy to find because they moved to the middle of the cuts and creeks with the shad. Spooning and drop shot techniques will work well until the shad start moving toward the banks and the backs of the creeks, cuts and pockets. Also look for Kentuckys to push shad to the top and frenzy feed out in the middle of nowhere. Small top water baits will work the best at this time.
Walleye love the cooler water conditions and are staying close the thermocline between 28 and 31 feet. Long liners are triggering a few with Purple Trout Hot’N Tots, Glass Shad and Reef Runners. Bottom bouncers with crawler harnesses or leech harnesses will now come back into play. Spoons will also stay productive in the 30 to 31 foot range or under the thermocline in the 40 foot range.
LAKE RATING: Until the lake stabilizes the bite will be spotty, rating will be fair by the end of the week.
Fishing for trout on the White River has been good on Berkley Power Eggs in yellow and white or Nuggets in orange and Rainbow. With generation the Buoyant Spoons, Little Cleo's and Blue Fox are the bait of choice. The fly fishermen did well on olive Woolly Bugger, olive scuds and sow bugs. The Brown trout are being caught on Jointed Countdowns, nightcrawlers and Rogues.
Remember to keep only what you can eat and release the rest for another day. Rick Culver of Wilderness Trail does the research for this report and the writing of this report.

The Fish Are Back on All Fronts!
Bass (Largemouth): Excellent! 13 year old Chandler Young and his fishing buddy, Dale Ladd from Independence, Mo. did very well in the small cove just to the North of our parking lot Saturday evening. Their presentation of White and Black Buzz Baits resulted in four nice largemouth bass all between 12" and15" in 25 minutes. They quickly followed up with a couple more really nice fish as evidenced in the photo. Dale claims whenever the water is running for some reason the largemouth seem to school up in our small cove. He claims during a good gate release he has caught bass on every cast. His theory once again proved correct. After our photo session the two sportsmen released all their bass unharmed. Well Done Boys!
Catfish: Good. Roy Green feather a local catfish legend caught 7 nice channel cats all 3#s or better Saturday morning. He swears by a smelly concoction called Sonny’s stink bait purchased at Bass Pro shop. He uses a spring-loaded device with a treble hook topped by a sponge and a small tubular sleeve within which he packs the stink bait inside, on, and around. He has used the stuff for 5 years with excellent results. My brother Bernie caught a nice 8# white channel cat Friday off the docks in front of our gas pumps on liver and CPT Matt McKinney came down with a gang from Ft. Leonard Wood and all the boys caught a nice mess of catfish on everything from hot dogs to dead crappie minnows while fishing off the docks.
Crappie: Good Richard Curry and J.J. caught this nice stringer of Crappie Saturday in Cole Camp Creek Cove. Minnows did the trick for them. Al Owens limited out on Crappie Thursday evening while fishing with his wife. He used minnows and he claims she provided the luck he needed!
White Bass: Good Kenny Hale caught four nice white bass and a large catfish while fishing the flats Saturday afternoon. The wipers and catfish struck his white rooster tail while he was slow trolling. He is shown here holding up his two best fish.
Remember a bad day fishing is better than a great day at work.

Crappie reports continue to be mixed. Most fishermen have been struggling. However, some of the better reports have the crappie being caught in 30 - 35 feet of water and being suspended about 20 - 25 feet deep. Some fishermen are catching them where you would expect them to be this time of year, up the rivers and creeks and shallow. Minnows, or minnow tipped jigs.
Bass fishing has been fair.
Cat Fishing continues to be good.
White Bass fishing has been fair.

Report by Burton's Bait and Tackle
CRAPPIE: Poor: The fish seem to have scattered as the water cools heading for shallower water. We get 5" or rain and the lake comes up almost 3' 6" above normal and muddys up the creeks and fishing is tough. Try around the marinas and the bridges till the water clears up.
BASS: Fair: Same as the crappie, lots of water and fewer places to fish. There seems to be some main lake action starting as well as tree lines and points in the upper arms of the lake. Some nice fish are being caught occasionally but not consistently. Worms, jigs, brush hogs seem to catch the majority of the fish. Some are coming on spinner baits and cranks. 8' or less of water seems to be the areas to concentrate on.
CATFISH: Good: The backs of the coves where the bigger creeks empty into the lake are loaded with fish. This will only last a few days till the water starts dropping. Worms and shad sides will work as well as anything. Since they are letting some water out of the lake the spillway should start producing some nice fish soon.
White Bass: Fair: The whites are really scattered and large schools are hard to find. Fish windy points on the main lake with small crank baits. As the water cools they should start bunching up.
WALLEYE: Fair: A few are starting to be caught on the main lake points by the bass fisherman. I caught a 30" monster last week and another by my partner during the 9-25 tournament that weighed 8 lbs 14 oz. Main lake points with a #5 shad rap in less than 8' of water.

GENERAL COMMENTS
Running water this week!
Water Conditions: Saturday and Sunday, water conditions were great. One generator on Saturday for a couple hours in the morning and Sunday they turned on a low two at 2:00 p.m. for about 5 hours. This week it has come on as early as 7:00 a.m. yesterday to the latest of noon on Tuesday. Little erratic pattern. It has been on as late as 10:00 p.m.
FLY FISHING TROPHY AREA (dam to Fall Creek)-SHALLOW WATER-WADING-
Of course, Saturday and Sunday fished very good. With the low water, zebra midges were working very well, especially the rusty, generally in the a.m. and the ugly as the day brightened up. Sunday we fished the sink-tip line with black woolly buggers or the sculpin. It was overcast Sunday and the black woolly buggers did best. I did catch several with the sculpin until one finally took it (5X tippet. next time it will be 4X). With the water flows during this week, the red tunghead midge and tan flashback scud have been the ticket. Tuesday we had three boats out and they did well on the ugly zebra midge. They had one guest throwing the Big Ugly (ugly looking dry fly) and he caught several with this. Customers coming into the shop have been picking up some fish on hopper patterns, especially yellow. Time to try those terrestrial patterns! Yesterday's trip was in two generators and, again, the red tunghead midge and tan flashback scud were the flies. Have seen a couple 24 inch plus Browns cruising the boat ramp area. Know a few nice Browns have been caught in the hatchery area. Mostly fishing scuds, tan or gray in the hatchery area. were If the horn sounds, don't roll it up. Get yourself to a safe place from the water rise and change to a larger, weighted scud (12) or a San Juan worm, add some split shot, a large indicator set pretty deep depending on where you are fishing, and fish the rise. You don't have to cast out very far. Look where the fish are sliding in toward the bank and fish those edges.
STAN'S TIP: Everyone has had it happen. You put your rod pieces together and can't get them apart. If this happens, and you have tried all the other techniques to get them apart, try putting ice around the joint. Let it cool down for a bit then try to get them apart. This usually works after everything else has failed.

MAIN LAKE Report by Sterett Creek Marina
Fishing Report from Sterett Creek Marina 10/12/05
The weatherman has been really kind to us this week and the way it sounds he is going to carry the good weather all the way through the weekend. This weekend we have Heritage Days in Warsaw which is always a good time. We have Super Bass going out of here on Sunday and with the conditions we have there should be a bunch of fish caught. The leaves are turning now so all and all it should be a great weekend.
LAKE LEVEL: 705.55
WATER TEMP: 68 deg.
WATER CLARITY: All arms clear to light stain.
BASS: Secondary points are the name of the game. Jig and frog seem to be the best bite going right now. Black and blue fished in 4' to 8' of water seems to be working the best in the mornings. Later in the day they seem to be suspending in 10' of water about 4' deep. The water temp is still in the upper 60's so the bass haven't pulled all the way to the backends of the creeks yet. I did hear of a few spinner bait fish last weekend that were caught off the points but the best bite is still the jig and frog. Look for the points that the wind is blowing across and fish the back side.
CRAPPIE: Have had a few good crappie reports this week. Steve Blake had good fish this week off the brush piles. Look for piles in 15' to 20' of water. The fish seem to be laying on top of the brush. Minnows are still the best bait. There are also fish on some of the inside tree rows. Look for the rows in 15' of water and use minnows down about 8'. Seems like the little fish are on the outside tree rows.
WHITES & HYBRIDS: The white bass fishing has been good this week. There has been fish on the humps and also on the banks. Point O 3 seems to be the best area. Spoons are working on the 8' humps. Rooster tails are working on the flats in 2' or less of water. When fishing the flats make sure the wind is blowing on them. Haven't heard of any hybrids this week.
CATFISH: No report.
That's going to be it for this week from Sterett Creek Marina
So till next week we bid you good fishin
