Fishing Report by: Wilderness Trail
Once again Mother Nature changed her mind and decided to return to summer weather instead of fall. Therefore everything we thought would develop this last week completely turned around. Lake temperature is 70 degrees, warming to 72 during the day, however, it is 70 degrees down to 40 feet, which is the top of thermocline. We are still very dry with no rain in sight and the lake level has dropped to 646.94, 7 ½ feet below normal pool. Angler’s Edge 3rd Annual Team Bass Tournament was held this last weekend and the anglers had to deal with bright sun, bluebird skies and no wind. First place went to the team of Robert Tilley and Steve St. Clair with a two day total of 21.42 pounds, second place went to the team of Rick Culver and Butch Petersen with 19.82 pounds and third place was taken by Shane Sanders and Lonnie Cox. Congratulations to all of the competitors.
Largemouth bass have become difficult to pinpoint now that they are off the banks. They are off the banks because the shad have left the banks. Somewhere from 10 feet of water to 40 feet of water on some sort of structure around secondary points is where they have pulled back to. Now is a good time to Carolina rig, throw jigs or drop shot until the largemouth move into their fall pattern and head back toward the banks.
Smallmouth are also hard to pinpoint but we know that they are using water depths from 36 to 40 feet of water to feed. With the full moon of October we are having probably our last crawdad hatch of the year so look for the smallies to move up on chunk rock or pea rock points to feed. Meanwhile fish football jigs, Spider Jigs, grubs and Mojo rigged centipedes around the deep side of points.
Kentucky bass are roaming with the shad and throughout the day they push them to the top to frenzy feed. Keep a top water bait tied on. As Kentuckys are spending most of the day swimming with the shad, graphing is more important this time of year if you wish to be successful. When you locate an active school of shad, drop a spoon or use a drop shot to trigger a strike.
Walleye have moved into the 30 to 40 feet of water range to feed instead of using that depth as a comfort zone. Long lining with lead core line and small baits (Hot’N Tots, Wally Divers and Glass Shad) have produced some nice 6 to 8 pound walleye this week. Spooning is still a good option over flats and drop offs, best colors are white or blue/silver. Other techniques to try are jigs with grubs or live shiners, crawler harnesses or leeches on a leech harness.
LAKE RATING: The lake is going through a conversion flip or turnover. Rating for the lake is fair to poor until the turnover is complete.
Fishing for trout on the White River has been good on Berkley Power Eggs in yellow and white and pink With generation the Buoyant Spoons, Little Cleo's and Super Dupers are the bait of choice. The fly fishermen did well on olive Woolly Bugger, olive scuds and sow bugs. The Brown trout are being caught on Flat Fish, nightcrawlers and Rogues.
Remember to keep only what you can eat and release the rest for another day. Rick Culver of Wilderness Trail does the research for this report and the writing of this report.

Bass (Largemouth): Good
Mike and Tim caught several nice bass on rubber night crawlers fishing the transition zones from the flats to the deep channel. They also had good luck using a variety of buzz baits.Catfish: Good.
Matt McKinney caught a nice 16# blue cat on Liver over the weekend. 8-year-old Hanna Bond landed a nice blue cat off our docks Saturday morning. The two-pound fish had her squealing with joy so loudly I stopped what I was doing on the far end of the docks and came over to see what the ruckus was. She caught the catfish using night crawlers. Take a kid fishing and they will be hooked for life!Crappie: Excellent!
Colonel John Rackovan, long time friend of the family came down from Greenville, PA and teamed up Kenny Hale. Together they boated this nice stringer of crappie using minnows. Richard Curry and his son Ryan and J.J. continue to slay the crappie as evidenced in this photo of pie plate crappies. Without disclosing their secret spot try the Cole Camp Creek coves. Ryan said they caught 37 of their 40 crappies on minnows.White Bass:
Good Stacy and Stu caught some nice white bass and a large catfish while fishing the flats Saturday afternoon. The wipers and catfish all struck their "Glow In The Dark" minnows Stu swears by. He buys the glow in the dark minnows at the local Walmart.Remember a bad day fishing is better than a great day at work.

Mid Lake-Kimberling City Area The cooler weather and drop in lake temperature has really helped the fishing pick up.
White bass are chasing shad in the morning, evening and on cloudy days. In early morning and late evening, bass are hitting War Eagle spinner baits in pockets just of the main lake where shore minnows are present. On windy days, bass can be taken on spinner baits off chunk rock banks where the wind is blowing in. Also try throwing a Zara Spook or Cordell Redfin on timbered points and bluff ends of a morning. As the day goes on, use a Carolina rigged centipede in watermelon red or a brown and purple football head jig on the main lake points and flats in about 25-35 feet of water. Some fish are also hitting white jigging spoons and drop shot rigs in about 30-45 feet of water on flats and bluff ends.
Lower End-Damn Area Early morning top water bite on timbered points on the main lake and secondary points. Zara spook seems to be working best. There is also an early morning spinner bait bite in cedar trees and gravel pockets just off the main lake. Drop shot and spoon fish are being caught in 30-45 feet deep on long flat main lake gravel points. Throw Football head jigs, brown and purple or green pumpkin ,on main lake gravel in 30-40 feet deep.
Upper End-James River Work the main lake flats with Carolina rig and football head jigs in about 20-30 feet of water. Try throwing a white jigging spoon in 25-35 feet of water on the flats around shad schools. Fish are also being caught on shallow running crank baits in the upper ends of the James and Flat Creek.
Bluegill Some of the bluegill are still shallow but alot of the bigger bluegill are on the main lake gravel flats and points in 25-35 feet deep. Crickets are best.

MAIN LAKE Report by Sterett Creek Marina
Fishing Report from Sterett Creek Marina 10/19/05
Looks like fall is right around the corner. The weatherman is talking like starting tomorrow we will be seeing fall temps moving into the area. Also we are to have some wind which is a good thing this time of the year getting the white bass up on the banks. The leaves are really turning now and its beautiful out on the lake. The COE has the lake pulled down about a 1/2' now so you have to be a little careful going back in some of the creeks.
LAKE LEVEL: 705.54
WATER TEMP: 70deg.
WATER CLARITY: Big & Little Tebo, light stain.
BASS: Spinner baits were the talk of the tourn. Sunday. Super Bass went out of here on Sunday and it took 14.74 lbs. to win and the winners were talking spinner baits. 1/2 way back in the creeks on the secondary points seems to be the best bite. There is still a good jig bite in 4' to 8' of water on black and blue jigs. If the water temp will fall like its supposed to the bass should get in the back ends of the creeks real soon. The shad have already moved back in, so good things are yet to come.
CRAPPIE: The crappie fishing remains slow. The best bite on this end of the lake is the brush piles. Fish are holding on the 20' piles about 15' deep. Jigs are starting to produce some fish. Had a report of some fish being caught off of shallower tree rows on the flats around 10' deep. Minnows are working the best in these areas. Haven't heard of any moving to the back of the coves yet.
WHITES & HYBRIDS: The whites are moving up on the windy flats. Rooster tails seem to be the best baits on these shallow fish. The fish are up in 1' to 2' of water and right now it seems to be a early and late bite. There are as lot of small fish on the flats so you have to weed through them to get to the big ones.
CATFISH: No Report.
So till next week we bid you good fishin
Tommy
