WALLEYE SEMINAR WITH ERIC OLSON (FLW WALLEYE TOURING PRO)
We have had another gorgeous week of weather with some light rain and sunshine with mild winds. The leaves are falling and the fall weather is just around the corner. Lake temperature is 63 to 64 degrees in the lower and mid-lake areas and 60 to 61 degrees in the upper lake above Lead Hill. The little rain we had didn’t affect the lake level, we are at 646.25, 8 feet below normal pool, which is the same as last week. The lake might be low but it is stable. The thermocline is gone and there is a wide area from the surface to 50 feet down where the temperature is about the same. This allows the game fish to go anywhere they wish, so look for areas where there are bait fish and you will have some success.
Crappie are in the 15 to 20 foot range around the brush piles and along the bluff walls. Slip bobbers with crappie minnows are working the best fished on a chartreuse of white jig head. White Bass have moved to the back of the creeks in 50 to 55 feet of water with some of the shad. We have not seen any top water action as of yet but the spoon bite can be exciting when you find a school.
Largemouth bass are still roaming in the lower and mid-lake areas but they are on the banks up in the upper lake areas. Spinner baits and crankbaits are working around Tucker Hollow and in the upper part of the Theodosia arm. The rest of the lake is slow but we are finding a few largemouth on wind blown points and blow downs or brush piles, spinner baits and crankbaits are so-so, but Spider Jigs, football jigs and trick worms will get you a few strikes.
Smallmouth bass just won’t move to the banks, they are staying out in 35 to 45 feet of water hugging the bottom. Channel swings and points are the holding areas. Carolina rigs, football jigs and Spider Jigs are the best baits at this time, except in the upper lake area where the Smallmouth are closer to the banks and anglers are catching aggressive smallies on spinner baits, crankbaits and Zara Spooks.
Kentucky bass are traveling with the shad, pushing them into pockets and cuts. Spoons and drop shot rigs are still your #1 technique to catch Kentuckys, but another technique that is working well throughout the lake is the football jig under the shad pulled along the bottom in 40 to 45 feet of water. Keep your eyes open for the fall top water frenzy feeding, which should take off any time now.
Walleye have been somewhat active this week but they are scattered and pinpointing where they are depth-wise is almost impossible. Crawler harnesses and leech harnesses are working in 30 to 38 feet of water along pea rock banks and around main lake points on flats. Casting Shad Raps, Wiggle Warts and DD14’s along chunk rock banks in the creeks in producing small walleye in the 18 to 20" range. Long liners are pulling lead core with Hot’N Tots, Shad Raps, and Glass Shad 34 to 38 feet down over 40 to 45 feet of water and they are catching a few quality in the 4 to 8 pound range each day.
Fishing for trout on the White River has been good on Berkley Power Eggs in yellow, pink and Sunrise. With generation the Buoyant Spoons, Super Dupers, and Rooster Tails are the bait of choice. The fly fishermen did well on olive Woolly Bugger, olive scud, Zebra Midges and Serendipity flies. The Brown trout are being caught on, Flat Fish, nightcrawlers and Rogues.
Remember to keep only what you can eat and release the rest for another day. Rick Culver of Wilderness Trail does the research for this report and the writing of this report.

Crappie:
Excellent! Colonel John Rackovan, long time friend of the family came down from Greenville, PA and teamed up Kenny Hale. Together they boated this nice stringer of crappie using minnows. Richard Curry and his son Ryan and J.J. continue to slay the crappie as evidenced in this photo of pie plate crappies. Without disclosing their secret spot try the Cole Camp Creek coves. Ryan said they caught 37 of their 40 crappies on minnows.Bass Largemouth: Good Mike and Tim caught several nice bass on rubber night crawlers fishing the transition zones from the flats to the deep channel. They also had good luck using a variety of buzz baits.
White Bass: Good Stacy and Stu caught some nice white bass and a large catfish while fishing the flats Saturday afternoon. The wipers and catfish all struck their "Glow In The Dark" minnows Stu swears by. He buys the glow in the dark minnows at the local Wal-Mart.
Catfish: Good. Matt McKinney caught a nice 16# blue cat on Liver over the weekend. 8-year-old Hanna Bond landed a nice blue cat off our docks Saturday morning. The two-pound fish had her squealing with joy so loudly I stopped what I was doing on the far end of the docks and came over to see what the ruckus was. She caught the catfish using night crawlers. Take a kid fishing and they will be hooked for life!
Remember a bad day fishing is better than a great day at work.

There have not been a lot of fisherman out lately. It's deer hunting time with firearms, and will be until November 22. There were a lot of deer taken on opening weekend, it seemed to be mostly does and small bucks. However several trophy bucks have also been taken. The cold front that hit Tuesday and the continued cold weather in the forecast is more like hunting weather should be. Duck hunting has been ok, and this cold front should push more into the area. Check out the latest hunting photos.
Crappie keepers have been slow. A fisherman can go out and catch small crappie all day long. The bigger crappie can be caught shallow near the bank in water anywhere from 3 - 8 feet deep, look for areas with good cover (log jams, fall downs) catch a few and move on. Go further up the branches, or work the back of coves. Also, some crappie can still be caught in deeper water, suspended anywhere from 6 - 12 feet deep, in water anywhere from 10 - 20 feet deep, around submerged cover. Minnows, or minnow tipped jigs have been the best bait.
Bass fishing has been slow.

Mid Lake-Kimberling City Area The cooler weather and drop in lake temperature has really helped the fishing pick up. White bass are chasing shad in the morning, evening and on cloudy days. In early morning and late evening, bass are hitting War Eagle spinner baits in pockets just off the main lake where shore minnows are present. On windy days, bass can be taken on spinner baits off chunk rock banks where the wind is blowing in. As the day goes on, use a Carolina rigged centipede in watermelon red or a brown and purple football head jig on the main lake points and flats in about 30-40 feet of water. The fish are also hitting white jigging spoons on main lake bluff ends over deep tree tops that are in 35-45 feet of water. Also try drop shot rigs and 4 inch gray grub on 1/4 and 3/8 ounce heads 30-45 feet deep on main lake flat gravel points and bluff ends over timber. With the colder weather, some fish are starting to move back into the creeks. They can be caught in the creek channels with jigging spoons, gray grub or drop shot around shad schools. On windy days, the crank bait bite should start to improve. Try throwing a crawfish patter wiggle wart.
Lower End-Damn Area There is an early morning spinner bait bite in cedar trees and gravel pockets just off the main lake. Drop shot and spoon fish are being caught in 35-45 feet deep on long flat main lake gravel points. Throw Football head jigs, brown and purple or green pumpkin ,on main lake gravel in 30-40 feet of water. On main lake and secondary points, throw a wiggle wart crank bait in crawfish patterns on ledges or rock structures. Some fish are starting to move back in the creeks, following the shad schools. They can be caught on jigging spoons, grubs and drop shot rigs.
Upper End-James River Work the main lake flats and points with Carolina rig and football head jigs in about 25-38 feet of water. Try throwing a white jigging spoon in 30-40 feet of water on the main lake flats and points around shad schools. Fish are also being caught on shallow running crank baits in the upper ends of the James and Flat Creek. Work channel banks with crawfish pattern wiggle warts and spinner baits.
Bluegill Some of the bluegill are still shallow but allot of the bigger bluegill are on the main lake gravel flats and points in 25-35 feet deep. Crickets are best.
Crappie I've been catching some nice crappie while fishing for bass on bluff ends over deep tree tops 30-45 feet deep on a 1/2 ounce white spoon and gray grub on 1/4 ounce head. I think crappie fishing will improve as the water temperature cools down. Some crappie are also being caught on flats in 25-35 feet deep in the Long Creek area and the James River on 1/4 oz jigging spoons, crappie jigs and minnows.
Lake Taneycomo Trout fishing is very good in the trophy area and also below Fall Creek dock. In the trophy area from Fall Creek to the damn, the trout size seems to be improving with the cooler weather. I'm catching some nice rainbows and a few browns on a small Rapala in the morning and also swimming a white 1/16 ounce jig. The trout in the trophy area will also take pink or green micro jigs under a float and a zebra midge has also been very good. Below the trophy are from Fall Creek down, the trout are biting very good on night crawlers or power baits. In the early morning you can catch them swimming a 1/16 ounce jig or little Cleo spoon.

GENERAL COMMENTS
Getting lots of wading time and people are catching fish.
Water Conditions: Water pretty much off last weekend. Ran one generator for couple hours Saturday and two for an hour on Sunday. Monday they ran one generator beginning at 7:00 a.m then turned it up to two which they ran until 5:00 p.m. Tuesday they didn't turn on anything until 6:00 p.m. for about an hour. Wednesday, one, then two starting at 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, one for a couple hours in late afternoon, Friday had a couple generators going to about three hours. So far today, it's off.
FLY FISHING TROPHY AREA (dam to Fall Creek)-SHALLOW WATER-WADING-
Boats on the water every day over last weekend and so far this week. Fishing very study all day. Last Saturday everything was caught on the copper/dun midge. Had a father and son out half day and each of they boated at least 20 fish. This was part of Dad's celebration of his 60th anniversary. Wow! Stan had a gentleman out from Alabama. As soon as he boated 15 fish he had had a good day so he was ready to get off the water in just a couple of hours. Everything on the copper dun midge. I fished Sunday and caught everything on the olive pine squirrel scuplin using a sink tip. Monday's trip most everything on the copper dun, at least 40 to the boat. Tuesday, to boat party, copper dun and lots of fish. Wednesday, nice to say a little different in the a.m. They used the rusty midge in the morning, also a few on the pine squirrel olive sculpin. Changed to the copper dun in the afternoon and also had at least a 40 fish day. The two boats out Thursday each boated 40 to 60 fish...most on the copper dun. Did worked a few different patterns, the sculpin and some parachute Adams, size 20 to catch a few fish on these for a little variation. Got to say the copper dun is working great. This is just a variation of our other zebras and will probably slow down sometime in the near future. We are tying it on a TMC 2457 hook, 2.0 mm tungsten bead head, small copper wire rib over 8/0 rusty dun thread wrapped down then up. Simple pattern, and it's working! Browns are spotty. Few people reporting catching nothing but Browns one day and can't buy one the next. Still catching some nice fish in the hatchery area on 14 or smaller tan or gray scuds. Red San Juan worm reportedly was doing well yesterday in this area.
STAN'S TIP: Right now the fish are really stressed. We're seeing an unusual number of dead fish in the water. Lots of pressure, lots of fish in the area and many days the oxygen is limited. Make certain you fish is fully revived after you bring it in. Hold it by the tail and support it under the belly with your other hand with the head of the fish facing upstream so the water flow will go through its gills. Don't swish it back and forth, just hold it facing upstream for a bit. When it is ready, it will take off.

Fishing Report from Sterett Creek Marina 11/2/05
This morning is more like summer than fall. The wind hasn't picked up yet but the weatherman says it's going to. The wind has been just right for the white bass fishing this week, we have seen a lot of fish come in. The way it sounds it is supposed to hold through the weekend so lets hope the fish do the same.
LAKE LEVEL: 705.78
WATER TEMP: 51 deg.
WATER CLARITY:
BASS:
The shallow bite is still going on. Spinner baits in the back ends of the coves has been working. Fish are running in 2' to 5' of water. Single spins seem to be working the best. There is a jig bite going on the secondary points in 4' to 8' of water, black and blue seems to be working the best. There are a few bass coming off the flat main lake flat points when fishing for whites. These fish are right on the banks.CRAPPIE:
Brush piles are the best of the best. The fish have started hitting jigs when fished in 20' over top the brush. Black and chartreuse has been the best color.WHITES:
The white bass fishing has really picked up this week. White Rooster Tails have been working the best. Rat L Traps and small shad bodies on a 1/4 oz. head have also been working. These fish are on the flat main lake points in a foot of water. Have seen some real nice whites, but no hybrids as of yet. You need to have the wind blowing in on the points.CATFISH:
No Report. This will be the last fishing report for the season as we will be closing the marina down for the winter. We will keep the campground open thru deer season. We will reopen March 1 2006.
We would like to thank all our patrons and wish everyone good holidays and a warm winter. Look forward to seeing you in the spring. Sterett Creek Marina
