Fishing Report by:     Wilderness Trail

Hot days and warm nights sum up the weather pattern this past week.  90’s during the day and upper 60’s at night put a damper on the amount of time one could stand out in the heat and fish, but if you could bear it, you could catch some nice fish.  Lake temperature has pushed up to the 80 degree mark with warmer water in the back of the creeks and coves and the game fish have definitely moved to their summer haunts and into their summer patterns.  The pool level has come down a little over the week.  There has been some generation daily with the warm weather.  The new level is 653.91, ˝ foot below normal pool.  Crappie picked up this week in the upper lake areas.  Flats that have crappie cribs and brush piles are holding numbers of nice crappie.  Live bait (crappie minnows) have been working better than artificial this past week.  Bobby Garland Swimming Minnows and tubes or grubs are still great to use as search baits, then switch over to the live crappie minnows once you find a school.

Largemouth bass are surface feeding in the mornings along the bluff walls and in the middle of cuts in the creek areas.  Zara Spooks, Sammy’s, X-raps and buzz baits are all triggering feeding largemouth.  After the sun is up move to the drop offs around points and fish a Carolina rig in 30 to 40 feet of water.  Best baits are baby brush hogs, Yum Wooly Hawgtails, finesse worms, trick worms and 5” Sinko’s.

Smallmouth bass have been spotty with the smaller Smallmouth up on pea rock banks in the mornings and the bigger Smallmouth holding out in 30 to 35 feet of water until night time.  Tubes and Mojo rigged centipedes or finesse worms are working in the mornings along the banks.  Carolina rigs and football jigs are starting to trigger the nicer Smallmouth in the deeper water.

Kentucky bass have moved to the balls of shad and are suspended in 30 to 40 feet of water in the pockets, creeks and coves throughout the lake,  Spoons are already starting to trigger Kentucky's that are under the shad.  Also fish a drop shot rig with a 4” worm or the new shaker heads with swimming worms. There is some frenzy feeding going on in the mornings but you have to be in the right spot at the right time.

Walleye have moved to the flats and channel swings but they are still in shallow water (18 to 30 feet).  Crawler harnesses and leech harnesses on bottom bouncers are working well and starting to catch numbers of small walleye and some nice keepers.  Trolling with lead core has started to pick up across the flats but you need to troll with your trolling motor when you are inside of 30 feet of water.  Best baits have been Hot’N Tots, Reef Runner Rip shads and #7 Glass Shad.

NIGHT TIME: Bass are moving up on the points and into brush piles a few hours after dark.  Jig and pigs, brush hogs and Gene Larew worms are the key baits.  Twin Spins and Single Spins are just starting to trigger night time bass.  As we move into the summer these baits will become dominant.  The new Chatter Bait should be a hot night time bait also.  Night time walleye are up on the flats feeding.  Points are okay to fish but the numbers are now on the flats.  Fish 20 to 26 feet of water with White Glass Shad or crawler or leech harness with red or orange blades.

Fishing for trout on the White River has been doing well. With low or no generation Berkley Power Eggs in yellow or Sunrise have worked well along with red worms and night crawlers.  With generation the Buoyant Spoons, Little Cleo's and Countdown Rapala's are the baits of choice.  The fly fishermen have done extremely well with little generation on olive Woolly Bugger, Blood Midges, Zebra Midges and sow bugs..   The Brown trout are being caught on jointed Rapala’s, Shad Raps, suspending rogues and night crawlers.

Remember to keep only what you can eat and release the rest for another day. Rick Culver of Wilderness Trail does the research for this report and the writing of this report.

Lake of the Ozark water elevation is 657.70’. Truman lake water elevation is 707.53’. Spillway water temperature is 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Water discharge from Truman Dam is 0 CFS through the turbines.

Crappie: Steady Crappie fishing remains surprisingly steady being so far into May. A best time remain early morning and in the evening hours after the sun begins to hit the tree line. Minnows fished from our docks against the banks continue to produce nice stringers of fish. Tony Wylie showed me a nice 13-˝ inch pie plate crappie he had in his fish basket late Monday afternoon. Dave and Margaret Jones from Warsaw have done real well all spring catching crappie from our docks and here is a nice picture of them holding up 10 keepers they landed in only 1 ˝ hours. Great job guys.

Catfish: Excellent! Al and Rose Weston and son Paul have been doing exceptionally well on trotlines the past few weeks. Paul weighed in a 63# blue cat he caught on a live bluegill last week and they have been routinely catching 20# fish.  Al said it won’t be long and the flat heads will start biting.  His bait of choice is live bait. Al said that flatheads were hitting silver and gold rattle type plugs in deep water

Largemouth Bass: Good. Dale Ladd and Andy Chronister stopped by late Monday for their bass report. The boys said Buzz Frogs made by Young are doing real well for them early in the day.  Once the sun begins to climb they said flip the shallows with jigs and 10” rubber worms. They limited out on bass Sunday.  Don’t forget their upcoming bass tournament scheduled shortly.  For specifics on their schedule of bass tournaments this summer check out our “Happening” piece in the web site.

Walleye: Good. Walleyes are hitting the yellow and gold rattle type plugs the flatheads were hitting as mentioned above.  For best results fish the deepest channels you can find.

Carp: Good Dale and Andy also reported the carp are beginning to move into the shallows to feed and eventually to begin spawning. The boys honed their archery skills this past weekend and took 16 nice carp bow fishing.

Lake Map

Report by: South Fork Resort

Lake Level : 604
Normal Lake Level : 606
Water Condition: Dingy - Clear
Surface Water Temp: 64 - 68 - depending on time of day and depth of water.
The water condition is dingy to lightly stained in the upper reaches to clear near the dam. Turkey season is over.

Crappie - The crappie have been biting all through the recent cold spells, they've just been pretty much on the small side. With the warmer temperatures the past couple of days we've been getting reports of better size crappie in the coves again. Most areas of the lake have been productive. Keep on the move and work the coves and cutouts that provide good cover. Minnows first, jigs second.

Bass fishing has been good. A lot of bass are being caught, several keeper size and better. Rocky banks and standing timber. Spinner baits, jigs or plastic baits have been productive. You can read about bass tournament results at the MAO web site. The preliminary list for this years Bud-Lite tournament is now available on the Mark Twain Lake Chamber of Commerce web site.

Catfish - Catfishing has been very good, perhaps a slight downgrade from last week. Goldfish and perch for set lines and night crawlers for rod and reel fishermen.

Fishing at Pomme was really good this past weekend.  Bass tournaments had quite a few full limits.  22+ lbs winning weight with the next few places not too far under that.  Muskie fishing is doing great but the water is warming up to past 80 degrees and that is where we usually stop fishing for them.

White bass are picking up and the crappie are doing the same.  Really not your slow hot weather bite.  Looking for the whites to start busting shad on the surface before much longer.

CRAPPIE:  The spawn is over and the fish are moving toward summer areas as the water temperature rises.   Start fishing areas at the mouths of the coves and in some of the shallower 12' to 15' brush piles on the main lake.

BASS: Good to Excellent:  Tournaments the last couple of weeks have produced outstanding numbers of fish and some very impressive weights.   A 43 boat tournament caught 127 fish with 15 five fish limits.   Almost 19 lbs was first place.   The fish are being caught in a variety of places.   Shallow tree lines in the upper arms or main lake grassy points.   Everything from rigs to jigs is catching fish.

CATFISH:  Good:  The cats are feeding up now and will be attacking the crappie and bass spawn.  Fish shallow with about any bait.   Live or natural baits are best.   The spawn is soon to start.

White Bass:  I have been catching some whites on pepper spoons on the humps and old road beds coming out of the river.   Some on the Trimble dam and not many on the main lake yet.   They are due to be there.

WALLEYE:  The walleye are becoming more numerous on the main lake points.   Use # 5 or #7 shad raps and fish from 2' deep the 10' deep.

Crappie Crappies fishing has slowed down but some are still being caught under deeper docks and deep pole timber, but are scattered.

Lake Taneycomo

Trout I'm catching some nice rainbows and a few browns on a small Rapala in the morning and also swimming a white 1/16 ounce jig.  The trout in the trophy area will also take pink or green micro jigs under a float and a zebra midge has also been very good.  Below the trophy are from Fall Creek down, the trout are biting very good on night crawlers or power baits.  In the early morning you can catch them swimming a 1/16 ounce jig or little Cleo spoon, in line spinners are also good in the mornings.

GENERAL COMMENTS

Lots of time to wade, however, they have run 1 generator almost every afternoon around 4:00 p.m.

Water Conditions: A little erratic. A few mornings flow has almost stopped or backed up. Table Rock Lake is still a little above pool (915.0).

FLY FISHING TROPHY AREA (dam to Fall Creek)-SHALLOW WATER-WADING-

Boats out yesterday and today, and we fished for an hour or so Sunday afternoon. Fishing stead but slower than usual. Yesterday's 1/2 day boated about 20 fish. Most were 13-14 inches. One nicer one. Primrose and Pearl was the most consistent. Caught a few on a gray sow bug (one of the larger fish), and the rusty midge. Had a couple nice fish take a gray, size 18 WD40 but never got to the boat. We fished mostly from the Rockin Chair down to a little below the boat ramp. Today's trip boated around 30 fish. Some on the Primrose and Pearl , but most on a size 18 scud hook with a pink glass bead, tan micro polar chenille with a little tan tail. (New fly one of our guides is using.) They fished below Rockin Chair, through the KOA area, Point Lookout area and a little below that area down to Fall Creek. If it continues to produce, we'll have it in the shop. Sunday afternoon we fished the Primrose and Pearl Midge and a size 20 pheasant tail soft hackle. We caught about 25 fish between the two of us in a little over an hour. Fished the North Platte outside Casper , Wyoming last week. What a fishery! Numbers are as good as Taneycomo when it is fishing very good. However, the fish are consistently 18 inches and up. We fished two half days and one full day. Stan and I caught at least 200 fish during this time. Great fishery, nice lodge/cabin where we stayed (right on the North Platte . This is a destination to put on your places to go.

STAN'S TIP: Sun lotion, sunglasses (polarized) and lots of water right now. Weather has been in the upper 80s and low 90s. Stay hydrated! We know from the North Platte about staying hydrated. Was not out there (90s) and we drank tons of water. Still washed out by the time we got off the water.

Fishing Report from Sterett Creek Marina      6/14/06

                           Lake Level :        707.58

                          Water Temp:      77deg.

Water Clarity:    Clear to light stain.

This has been the start of a perfect week. The weather has been fantastic with cool mornings and evenings and not to much wind. Even the day time temps. have been good. The fishing remains about the same as last week with everything moving to the summer pattern. Even the whites are starting to surface so with the warmer temps forecasted for the weekend things should really pick up.

BASS: Last nights Hawg Fights took 13.87lbs. to win so you could say the bass fishing is good. Points seem to be holding fish in 8' to 10' of water. Main lake timbered seem to be the best with secondary not to far behind. Most fish are holding on the breaks clone to deeper water. Big worms and the sweet beaver in watermelon red or green pumpkin red seem to be the best colors. One tip I found is that they want a slow moving bait. There are a few fish starting to pull up on brush piles in 15' to 20' of water. Beavers are working on them. Winners last night were Ernie Cox and Russell Beck. 2nd. went to Larry Hahn and his grand daughter Christian ( who didn't pay her 1/2 of the entry fee) with 8.67lbs and they also had big bass weighing 3.96lbs. Third was Tom Monsees and Lance Estus with 5.16lbs.

CRAPPIE: The crappie bite is still a little slow. Most of the fish we are seeing are off the ends of the flats in the tree rows setting in 17' to 20' of water. Minnows fished 8' to 10' down has been the best bait.

WHITES & HYBRIDS: We are starting to see the whites surface. The COE. hasn't been running much water lately so the bite on the humps has slowed a little. The area from the dam to KK Island has had the most surface activity the last few days. Small spoons skipped on the surface or Rooster tails in white and Road runners in red and white have been the best baits. If you see the fish surfacing stay back as far as you can because they are spooking easily.

CATFISH: The catfishing is good here on Truman. Trot lines set in 4' of water with 1' stages baited with leeches are the best thing going right now. Set lines close to a creek channel or ditch.

Till next week.

Here at Berry Bend we have a good bite working for Crappie.   In the early morning hours nice size crappie are being taken on the flats and shallow lake points.   Later in the day, fishing around cedars and hardwoods in 20 feet of water seem to work best.

There have also been nice catches of both White Bass and Hybrids, they seem to prefer live bait jigged vertical.

Lots of catfish are being caught , with the favorite method being jug lines fished over the flats. People seem to be having luck with all types of bait, including hot dogs, leeches, and gold fish.
